---> Reflection

Going through out this subject, ‘ICT in BIOLOGY’ in 14 weeks, I have gained much knowledge about ICT and how to apply it in my teaching and learning process. There are lots of teaching technique I learned in this semester such as alternative conception, data logging, simulation and modeling, building e-portfolio, teaching and building a courseware using smart board application and others. I felt very grateful of taking this subject because nowadays teaching and learning process should being more interesting and interactive.

At first studying of alternative conception does not give me any sense, but after going through some readings, doing a group discussion, read journals on the misconceptions from the internet, I realize and understand the importance of studying this things. I learnt that students tend to get wrong concepts in science by getting information from their own reading, experience and others which will make their learning process being more difficult. As a teacher, I think we should play an important role to make sure that the students will always get right and exact facts and information. That will be a responsibility for a teacher to elicit student’s ideas by using techniques such as Predict Observe Explain ( POE ) , drawing, and others.

Then, studying about Engage, Empower and Enhance model also being a priority for me. This model will elicit student’s idea, carry out an experiment and relate the scientific concept learned to another situation. It was tally to the words Engage, Empower and Enhance. The Engage is to elicit student prior knowledge and here we can see either the students understand the topic they discovered or not. The Empower, we have to make an experiment, plot the graph and also included the discussion part. The last one student will be able to relate the scientific concept discussed to the other phenomenon or different situation. Sometimes, we need to change the types of tool kit used in class so that student will not feel bored and they enjoy their learning and teaching process. Because of that, the Engage, Empower and Enhance. Implementing this model need a lot of ideas which are brilliant and can elicit student’s ideas. So that, I’m as a teacher, will make sure that I myself will always have any creative, innovative idea by reading so many books, surfing internet and media Massa.

Besides that, problem occurs in learning process can be reduced. As example student sleep in the class or skip the lesson. Another things in this subject is learning on data logging, simulation and modeling. Data logger is a tool which is used in our experiment. This tool is easy to handle and a much better tool to conduct experiment. It is because, we used sensor to measure the data instead of using the convenient lab apparatus. Sometimes, this data logger will reduce the experiment time and the data is more exact. We can interpret the graph without sketch it one by one. I think that, when the using of data logging in the class in carry out, student will get more time to ask teacher about their discussed topics and not just wasting their time to conduct experiment.

Instead of that, the using of simulation and modeling also interesting and give fun in teaching and learning process. Now, we can use this application to increase the student’s understanding towards any topic. Teacher can get the simulation and modeling from the internet or feel free to build the tool kit by their own. I felt that this application is much more interesting because I can give this tool kit to them and they can still refer it when they at home. In modeling, there are lots of variable that we can see. Students can adjust and predict what will happen to the result. As example, student can compare the results on different types of planet and moon based on effect of gravity towards the elevation of the spring and what will happen if no gravity is applied. In our daily life, for sure we are not going to measure the elevation of spring at the moon and other planet. So, we still can do it by using modeling.

But, nowadays teachers are not taking an action to use this application in their classroom. It is because they feel difficult to handle it. The problem in integrating the use of data logging is not enough data logger. It is because this data logger is much more costing and lab assistant do not want to handle it. Apart from that, the using of data logger in the lab also will train the student being too much depends on the things. This will make them less paying attention in doing experiment and day to day they will lazy to learn.

Each thing got pro and cons, so that teacher should know on how to handle it. Interesting teaching and learning process depends on the way teachers act in the class. So that, teacher should know what their students need and don’t. In my opinion, the relationship between teacher and student also can be one of the factors of student’s achievement and success. I also think that the ICT is wonderful but it still cannot replace the role of teacher. By hook or by crook teacher is still play an important role to the student’s success and student’s behavior. If there are fail in the class or examination, the teacher also said to fail in teaching them.
